What is the Pagan Federation?

The Pagan Federation, founded in 1971, works to safeguard the religious rights of Pagans, that they might worship and live free from defamation. It liases with the Home Office, hospital pastoral services, Prison chaplaincy, Parliament, Social Services, GLA and other official bodies. The PF has helped supply expert witnesses in court, cases and has assisted in cases of religious discrimination. It has succeeded in having Paganism recognised as a valid religion by the UK's Interfaith Network and by the Home Office. The Federation aims to make it easier for Pagans in hospital or prison to be attended by Pagan religious visitors and chaplains. Other projects include providing information for those wishing Pagan rites of passage - handfastings (weddings), child-blessings, and funerals.

As a resource for the media, the Pagan Federation handles over 1,000 enquiries each year from radio, television, newspapers and magazines. In addition to supplying general information, it arranges interviews and provides contacts to specific traditions. It counters inaccurate and defamatory portrayals of Paganism by sending corrections and, where necessary, making formal complaints. Our education materials are placed in academic libraries and reference institutions; on occasion they are also sent to teachers, social workers and other professionals. In all its endeavours, the PF promotes factual accuracy, mutual tolerance among faiths and assistance to those who wish to explore Pagan spirituality. After all, Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Britain is a signatory, states:

'Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion;
this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom,
either alone or in community with others and in public or private,
to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.'

The Pagan Federation, works to make Paganism accessible to people genuinely seeking a nature-based spiritual path. It is headed by an elected committee and administrative officers, and has over forty regional coordinators who act as its mainstay of activity. Coordinators stay in postal contact with members in their areas, provide information on events, put them in touch with other Pagans if they so wish, and are available to answer queries.

The Pagan Federation publishes a quarterly journal, Pagan Dawn (formerly The Wiccan, founded in 1968), and other publications. The PF have links with Druid, Wiccan, Odinic, Northern, Celic, Eco-magic and both men's & women's spirituality groups, as well as with general Pagan groups. In addition to its regional coordinators, the PF has many local organisers who are active in their communities. The PF hosts seasonal rites, celebrations, pub moots, socials, low-cost workshops and numerous conferences. It coordinates an annual Earth Healing Day, when Pagans across Britain, Europe and overseas join their energy for an end to the destruction of the Earth. In addition, the PF organises an Annual Conference in London at the end of November, as well as many other conferences and events nationally.
