STAFFS AND STAVES

Staffs and Staves have been used by Magicians, Druids, Witches, Shamans and their kindred for centuries to enable them to connect with the powerful polarities of Earth and Sky. They are often used; particularly by people working in the Celtic, Druidic, and more ceremonial esoteric traditions; in the same way that Wands are generally used. That is, for directing intentions, for healing, and often as signs of office and spiritual authority. If you spend time out in wild places, a Staff is a friend to lean upon who will not let you down, and will hold you straight when you are tired.

STAFFS

I craft Staffs from straight pieces of wood of good grain, and which I store away to season to ensure that they are just right to use in this work. When a piece of wood is ready, I carve, stain, then wax it to make a beautiful item.

The Snake Maker Serpent coils along the length of each Staff, which is also headed with a carving of a Totemic creature, an arrangement of Shamanic patterning, a Spirit head, or similar. Each Staff is finished in golden brown, green and similar warm, natural wood stains, and then with several coats of wax from my own Bees. 

Let me know your designs- I will be honoured to carve you a Staff as described here, but I am happy to work from your designs- Would you prefer two Serpents? What Totemic creature or other design would you like carved at the top of your Staff? Simply let me know your needs and I will fulfil them. I will use appropriate carving styles inspired by native craft work, or else you can let me know which style you favour.

If for instance you work in the Keltic or Druidic traditions, we can discuss my carving your Staff in resonance with this. I have carved Staffs for Druids, Keltic Shamans, Wiccans, and even Freemasons, and so have a wide range of experience to draw upon.

I generally offer Staffs in two lengths, but some prefer to specify a particular length to be in tune with a particular tradition- for example, some traditions specify that your Staff should be your own height in length. I will be happy to work to your specifications, so do contact me to discuss this.

SHORT STAVES

These are simply shorter versions of Staffs, but are usually crafted so that they have a walking stick type handle at the top. I carve the handles of these into full representations of Totemic creatures- Fish, Wolf, Cat, Fox, or else head and shoulder representations of for example- Eagle, Raven or Owl.

Rather than the Serpent of Wisdom, Short Sticks lend themselves well to carving with intricate chip carving, and geometric patterning.
