FANS & SMUDGE FEATHERS

These are used for moving Smudge and Incense smoke around in rituals and ceremonies; for healing, centering and cleansing; and also for healing that involves ‘combing out’ inconsistencies, blockages and negativities in someone’s energy field- their aura.

For example, before beginning a ceremony, gathering or similar, it is good practise to ensure that the place in which this is happening, and all the people whom are involved, are all cleansed by having smoke from specific herbs fanned over them. Or, if you are seeking to cleanse yourself and drive out negative energy, you can use a fan or smudge feather to direct the smoke where you want it to go.

Feathers have the capacity; because of the way they are constructed; to ‘comb’ someone’s aura and remove blockages and ‘knots’- rather like brushing your hair to remove knots. Shamans and other healers often use feather fans for this.

TRADITIONAL FANS

This is the style of Fan traditionally used by many American Indian peoples, and consists of a handle which is shaped to be held comfortably, and with feathers set into the top.

The handle is made of wood, which is covered with light, strong leather, on which a design representing the four directions of the Medicine Wheel is beaded. This beadwork is in the form of a rosette, and I would be happy to put any design here that you choose, if you prefer something other than the Medicine Wheel design I generally use. Simply contact me to discuss this. The beaded rosette is 2 inches in diameter.

The Fan handle is approximately 7 inches long, and the feathers are approximately 9-10 inches long. So that the whole item is approximately 15-16 inches in overall length. Fringing with bead adornments at the end of the handle completes the piece.

FEATHERS: I can use either good quality imitation Eagle feathers, other feathers that I have in stock; such as Crow, Magpie, Swan, Pheasant, or Heron; or could use feathers that you supply. I am often asked to use feathers that someone has, and am happy to do this.

What feathers I may have in stock at any time will depend entirely on what Power has gifted me with in my journeys into the countryside, or what Power will bring when you contact me. The imitation Eagle feathers I use are good, and we can be sure that they do not come from illegally killed Eagles, and make a good, powerful fan.

CARVED HANDLE FANS

These Fans are very popular with those who work within a broader Shamanic framework, and do not work through a specifically Native American approach.

There is considerable evidence that Fans of this kind were used in Europe and Britain during the Stone Ages. Wood, bone and feathers do not survive the ages well, and so the physical evidence is scant, but there are representations on pottery, in carvings and similar which suggest their use.

I carve the handles of these Fans from Native hard woods that can be carved in good detail, and use ancient ‘chip carving’ patterns that date back to the earliest times to decorate them, and to yield a handle that will not slip in your hand. These patterns were probably the original signs and glyphs from which writing was developed, and they were used to decorate sacred objects all over Europe and Britain from the end of the last ice age.

The same principles apply for feathers for this style of Fan as detailed for Traditional Fans.

The Fan Handle is approximately 9 inches long, and the feathers are an additional 9- 10 inches long. This yields a well balanced Fan of approximately 18 inches length. Which is perfect for use in Smudging, and Shamanic ceremonies.

SMUDGE FEATHERS

To a handle of light wood which is wrapped with leather or cloth, I firmly attach beautiful feathers to make a Shamanic artifact which can be used in healing or smudging as described in the information at the beginning of this catalogue.

Either one large feather is used, or three slimmer feathers. These are generally approximately 9- 10 inches in length, and the handle is 4 inches long. This makes a light Fan that is held between the fingers and thumb for precision work, rather than the full hand grip which is used with either Traditional or Carved Handled Fans.

As with Fans as described above, I either use good quality imitation Eagle Feathers for these, or else what feathers Power supplies. Or else I am happy to use feathers that you supply, and occasionally Power brings me very special feathers, which I reserve for use in Smudge Fans.

If you want other than the imitation Eagle feathers I use, contact me to discuss this. Also specify what combinations you require- cloth or leather wrap, decorative style, etc.

I decorate the handles of these Smudge feathers in three different ways:-

· Decorative thread work- using silk threads in bright colours to weave beautiful patterns on the handle.

· Wrap beadwork in the Medicine Wheel or other colour combinations.

· Peyote stitch beadwork in beautiful designs.

PRICES:- Thread work- £23.00
Wrap bead work £38.00
Peyote bead work £66.00
